Floral Affair: Working with Resins

After months of experimenting we are so excited to launch our second collection, Floral Affair. When we started brainstorming for this collection, we knew that we wanted to find a way to encapsulate warmer nostalgic summer days. We began by foraging flowers on our summer travels to the British countryside and Germany and pressing them in old heavy books.

Shortly thereafter, we discovered resins and realised they would be a perfect way for us to preserve the beautiful flowers we had been collecting. Epoxy resins, which are used for jewellery making, come in two parts: the resin and the hardener. When the two parts are mixed together, a chemical reaction occurs that causes heat production. This heat changes the epoxy from a liquid to a solid.

Though beautiful, conventional epoxy resins are made from fossil sources, are not biodegradable and can only be burned under strict precautions due to the release of toxic substances. In order to minimise our environmental impact, we looked hard to find an alternative and eventually found Super Sap Bio-resins. Bio-resins are made from natural plant and vegetable extracts or renewable resources. They are made with a reduced carbon footprint and reduced power and water consumption. These resins can be made from anything from sunflower seed, to soya bean, to rapeseed, to even potatoes. According to recent studies by the University of Wales and Cambridge University, for every tonne of eco-resin produced two and a half tonnes of our CO2 emissions are neutralised.

As we wistfully remember summer on this cold November day, we hope our Floral Affair jewellery collection helps to transport you back to easier and warmer times. What we love about this collection is that every piece is unique; depending on the type of dried flowers we have in stock, the flowers in each set of earring will vary. If you’d like to request special flowers or colours you can email us at fieldsandferns@gmail.com.

We are not done yet experimenting with this new material and are currently working on perfecting a special item that will launch later this month so stay tuned!
